Hidden behind a small door and wedged between two buildings in the Pigalle neighbourhood of Paris is a newly transformed basketball court, complete with a colourful Playtop surface.
The Duperré playground is the only place in the area where young people can play sports for free. However, local residents complained about the noise and it was threatened with closure. In stepped Stéphane Ashpool, the founder of fashion brand Pigalle, who, every year, organises a basketball tournament with Nike. He secured funding from the local municipality and Nike to give the play area a facelift. Playtop licensee Squaire was asked to create the best playground in Paris that was not only colourful and a great contrast to the surrounding buildings but was also quieter!
The flooring of the new court is where Playtop comes into play – Squaire installed Playtop EPDM play surfacing with a depth of 15mm across 220m2, patterned in geometric shapes to reflect the Pigalle brand. It includes the “Duperré Pigalle” logo that is 2.7m wide in bright, vivid shades of yellow, red and blue.
Playtop safer surfacing was the ideal choice for the installation. Available in a range of over 20 vibrant colours, Playtop is durable and, importantly for the neighbouring properties, cushions ball rebound to reduce noise levels.
The transformation has attracted lots of attention, particularly on social media, with one comment saying: “I bet that everyone will understand the value of maintaining a balance between lovers of basketball and a neighbourhood wanting to be able to open the windows without unbearable noise pollution.”
